i had a talk with my homeboy grills and inspired me.

ive got a job!
but im out of vancouver, and canada.
i miss it a ton, but i am looking forward to wilding out in amuricah.

im now in the north baltimore,maryland area.

all of this news is super old since ive been here since september...ish.

ive been working on picking up the pieces and starting life from square one all over again.

it has been tough so far to meet new people but ill try and figure it out.

i dont have the luxury of knowing at least 1 person in town.

oh well fuckit.

time to get inspired and take life by the balls right?

so, as far as drawing goes,

for the last 3-4 years ive been looking for a 40x60 sheet of bristol like in acad.

ive been unlucky...until now.

ive found a comparable paper in baltimore.

the problem is....

its 3 ft high(36"= good!)

30 ft (362"=whaaa?)

i think ive decided to go on a marathon and attempt to finish this fucker.

minimally, itll be bigger than anything done in the past if i stop at say 3x3ft.

but fuckit.

im alone out here,

and im really gonna try and find myself out here.

time to see what im really made of.

not only is drawing going to be effected....

ive got some new ideas for 2012.

since losing my job and setting up shop down here,

ive had alot of time to think about how i want to attack life from now on.

im going to be leanin on my friends for some new adventures,

and venturing into some new directions.

which includes this blog.

the goals for 2012?

1. setup this new team concept with some peoples...

(its cryptic, but i dont want people stealing this shit)

2. continue this massive drawing

3. no.1 will setup this goal, which is expand my knowledge in other areas of art

(to never again get caught if i ever lose my job)

4. trim the fat in all parts of my life.

ever since i got down here, it has been all about...

"out of sight, out of mind"

sad news.

i havent updated in a while

because i have been layed off from my job.

i have alot of love for nlg,

and id definitely work for them again one day.

but dont cry for me (yet).

i have had some leads,

and will post some images from my travels soon.

the key word here is "travels".

it kinda looks like i might be leaving vancouver soon.

been in talks with a number of places around north america....

all really fun places that i never thought i would ever hear from,

or work at.

marathon complete,
2 years of hard work paid off.
im not done.
i think running will be a forever change,
and this will not be the last marathon.
i think i will do 1 per year,
and concentrate on losing more weight.
now its time to focus on drawing and learning more programs.
im going to bust ass and try to combine
enjoying the weather and draw A SHITLOAD.

things i realized and will try to work on specifically.

facial expressions
full body + poses.

it sounds like alot,
but its not.
im going to look back and rework some of my old drawings
(something I NEVER do)
and try to fix problems,
to see if i can level up quickly.

bruce timm. (batman animated, head of warner bros animation basically)
i read a long ass interview about his process
and think i might give it a try.

my craft and patience has waivered for a long time...

finally slowing down at work.
i can concentrate on this drawing,
and my running!
i just finished a 1/2 marathon, i beat my old time of 2h 01min.
(with 1h 54min).
so far on this drawing i gots:

skullomania (street fighter ex 2)
cammy (super street fighter iv alternate 2 costume)
and scorpion (mortal kombat 2)
im moving into the other games,
just to make sure i can fit them in

ive been crunching at work, and this month was pretty brutal.
but i did get all of my workouts in, and some drawing.
in the meantime...this time ive decided to really plan out my drawing....
and looking at my older drawings,
i could probably fit around 70 characters
on the sheet, and start to visualize how this thing is going to go down.

one of the most important things i learned this year
is finishing strong.
its really easy to go hard at the beginning of a run,
drawing session, year,
....or whatever.
its real easy to give up on goals dues to fatigue, distractions,
injuries, real life shit, ...or whatever.
one thing that can make up for all of that? just finish.
finish anything.
finish first,
finish last,
just finish.
and if you have swagger, style on em...
finish strong.

right now im in the middle of a '96 mindstate.
i remember giving up my '96 christmas holidays to draw.
im blasting tunes, trying out some fun stuff with markers,
and just drawing. (and running hard)
im pounding out this drawing and hope to start 2011

final results of the marathon:
dnf.
34k i cramped out and could not finish.
sad face.
i was bummed out and crippled for 2-3 days.

but its not over!
ive had time to be bummed out and figure out what happened.
but now its time to get back on the horse and come back harder!
training for the next marathon on may 11!
ill start officially in january,
but in the meantime, im going to try and finish 2 drawings,
do some strength training,
and really adjust to a newer running lifestyle.

i was concentrating on my final training to the half marathon.

i thought about how to attack this drawing ALOT.

on a serious note:

found out yesterday

that a teacher i had at acad has passed on.

to reflect:

before i met him

i imagined him like a classic sensei from japan.

all i knew about him before meeting him was,

he was a strict, a hard ass on design,

with a small bamboo stick to whip your hand

if you messed up on the mouse or if u didnt do enough roughs

(which sounds like all acad teachers, heh)

he was different. a super softee.

show respect and respect was given back.

the hard walls came down once respect was earned.

he was like,

a tough guy + a zen master,

a hard rock but with soft spots.

one critical point

during my third year there,

i had lots of negative things going on in my life.

to keep the story super short,

i was really down.

in my mind i had already checked out of school,

and was ready to check out on life.

eugene sensed this,

dropped teacher mode,

and sat down for a real heart to heart talk.

i think that was the first time i really

looked at any teacher in a new light.

i remember that was my' tsn turning point'

of my acad life.

strict to get the best out of students,

but understanding and caring.

the last time i saw him in person

was in 2006 while walking through the halls of acad.

it was the first time i had been

back inside the building since i bailed in '98.

i was hoping someone would be kickin around.

it was a good to see a familiar face in the marking room.

a taboo place for students back in the day...

(always wondered what went down in there)

he was in the middle of marking,

but he invited me in and talked for an hour reminiscing.

all the time in the world for alumni.

i can only imagine all the people he runs into,

i can only imagine all of the late nights he dedicated to students.

a great man.

thats how i remember eugene ouchi.

rest in peace.

i will miss you.

after looking at my flickr from 2009,
i realized that damn!....i took a hella long break.
i think i got burned out on everything.
trying to take photos,
but not really improving beacause i didnt
take a step back and evaluate any of the photos.
i got stuck in a groove and editing in the same way,
and shooting the same way and not really thinking.
this past year off did me wonders,
as i worked on my drawing and improved drastically.

as far as my photos go, i think ive graduated

to the third year of a four year self taught program.

what to possibly attack this year?

- in studio concept photography (thats a dream)

- shooting more event with tons of people around town

(this was inspiration from martin parr's: small world book)

- some experimentation with tons of different light situations

it sounds like something u would write as a tattoo on a back.
since i have been looking at tattoo books lately,

in this case, its rashida jones.
ive already finished this,
but i need to spread out the posts lol.
i think looking back is helping alot with personal process,
and i am definitely seeing some leveling up.

some thoughts on this particular drawing at this stage:
- general framework is there
- some angles on eyes to face seems to be off
- need to get even looser with the rough
in order to get some lines i would never get.

lately i have not been motivated to draw,
or play games, or do anything.
which led me to watch a full basketball game,
(which i havent done in about a year or so)
and a couple of lame hockey games.
i dont know what it is, but realizing it is happening helps ALOT.
i cant let this funk get at me for too
long and hope to mix things up this weekend.
(even though i working on saturday)

id like to improve to the next set of drawings

had the worst flu of my life.
even though i wasnt diagnosed at all,
i know i had the h1n1.
missed a whole week of work (oof).
anyways, im on the home stretch of defeating this evil,
and its back to drawing....for only a day.
monday is the first day of work where ill have to live there
for a while in order to catch up on all of the work i missed.

with the picture ^above^...
at this stage i was pretty happy with the start of the drawing.
looking at it 9 days later....
i think i should have proved out the lighting alot more,
and really attacked the expression alot more.
maybe exaggerating here and there,
and hopefully pumping up the image from its original reference.

on some other ish...
got to the 10 000 gp mark (now im g2-a grade) with cammy as a main char.
ive got over 1200 matches with cammy, about 1800 matches total.
also got 160 hours logged (holy crap) on the game.
ive learned a ton,
and im now taking on the japanese mentality:
"playing to learn"
once that happened, my gameplay has improved dramatically
and im just messing around and
winning more often and without trying.
my instincts are alot better,
and im starting to find patterns
alot faster with opponents online.

currently playing:
call of duty: modern warfare 2 (xbox 360) - finished single player!
street fighter iv (xbox 360) -g2A grade!
tekken 6 (xbox 360) -working on stupid campaign mode

i messed up on the overall finish of this image,
and the habits continued onto the next drawing.
there are some things i like...
overall craft and line quality,
but i dont like the lighting, proportions,
and expression.
(pretty much hate everything,

but live and learn...and i learned alot, namaste)

onto games ish:
got to level 41 (of 50) as a siren on borderlands.
get that loot and treh-shaa!
also stuck at 9600gp on street fighter champ mode.
so painful working with a lower tier char (cammy).
u definitely cannot make any mistakes.
u can win with the char,
but damn....random uppercuts, ultras
from higher tier chars drive me mental.
i gotta be more disciplined.
(just like in my drawings lol)
im gonna stick with cammy,
....but damn, times are hard.

thought id show some new drawing,

so... i went over to imdb,
saw a shot of some show
'lipstick jungle' (what the eff?)
and drew lindsay price.
in hindsight,
i should have picked a picture with a better facial expression,
or glasses, or more interesting hairstyle,....
but fuckit!....just gotta finish anything right now!
at this point im pretty happy with what i gotz,
and im gonna move straight into final ink.
ill square out the bottom,
and make a funky outline shape on the top,
to make a cooler sihlouette.
at this point ive worked on it about 70 min-ish?

didnt realize it was soooooooooo long between posts...oops!
to update,
ive been taking a long ass break
(which is dumb)
and work has been gettin nutz (so that doesnt help).
but i thought something that i normally do to get out of a block.
i pick a random image off the net.
in this case i hit imdb,
kate walsh happen to be on the front page,
and i drew her right off the bat...
and got a decent drawing out of it.
i think ill do more rnadom ish (i got a couple in the bag now)
and move on to some real projects.

things i wanna work on:
1. better description of lighting thru ink lines alone
2. grey scale marker stylez (gotz my copicz son!)
3. better line choices overall (i might explain this one day)
4. more patience in the early stages
5. better expression and body weight in psoes

heh on some completely other ish:

now at 8600GP (g-2 b grade) and main char. cammy.
ive learned a crazy amount in the last couple of months,
and im now getting out of the 'scrub' level.

(to less dirty scrub)
ive got 900 matches as cammy under the belt
and workin on g-1 grade (15000 GP) before
super street fighter iv hits the shelves.

1. matchup vs. dhalsim, chun-li, rufus, vega, blanka

i will make a drawing of cammy in the next couple of weeks,

on a serious note...
i found out yesterday that an old friend
from high school had passed on sunday morning.

to reflect:
i met him in high school,
we went to opposing junior high schools,
but that didnt seem to matter.
he joked around alot and didnt stay with
the traditional cliques in high school.
he got along with everyone,
and was the bridge for alot of different cliques.
i think he was the first person i met in high school who wasnt from
my old junior high/elementary.

in fact, i would say he introduced me to alot of

cool people in h.s. since i was so socially inept.

the good times i remember come from:
clowning around in art class,
playing a ton of street hockey

and football together in whitehorn,
hanging with the crew
during many a lunch hour
goofin around.

one of the things im going to have to look for,
(that he was super proud of)
is his kick ass tackle during the
high school city championships...
one day ill find it, and post it in his memory.

the last time i saw him in person was
in 2004 for a high school reunion.
it was great to see him.
he was the same happy go lucky guy

i remembered in high school.

he always had a place in my heart,
since he along with everyone
who was a part of that high school crew,
brought alot of great memories in high school.

with a heavy heart,
i hope the family stays strong in these tough times...
my prayers go out to them.

i was really bummed out,
but i got more time to concentrate on drawing...

which is where i kept my zapped camera and lenses.
i noticed the camera had power. (what?!!!)
my camera had been dead for at least 2 months.
so i turned it on and BAM! it works!!!
i dont have to get a new camera and
now i can put financial focus to the computer.

i have a new focus for photography,
since i had this downtime without my camera.
i spent the time reading up
on some of my favorite photographers.

ive some ideas as to what to attack for my next project(s).

well...
tumbleweed on the blog for the last month or so,
since i have no camera, and computer has been flaky.
to update quickly:
went to emerald city (seattle) comic con,
got 3 original comic pages,
a bunch of signed prints,
pics with some of the artists.

then a week off with homeboy mike in town.
it was more a nature week with
visiting the bird sanctuary,
greater vancouver zoo (didnt even know van had a zoo),
and a more exploration in stanley park.

visited a ton of new restaurants, and my cell phone is full of meals.
damn i gotta do a gigantic post on that.

been a tough couple of weeks.
last week i had a bottle of juice crack open in my backpack,
and my camera died, so,...no pics for a while.

also, my computer has been acting up
(since it is 5+ years old)
and probably need to be replaced.

new computer and new camera in the next couple of months?
oh crap.

a calf injury has put my training to the side.
now i have to find other alternatives for cardio.
the sun run is coming up april 19th (i think)
and i just found out the half marathon is in early may.
which kinda put 2 events in jeopardy...
unless this injury heals quick!

on the positive tip,
ive bit into the drawing, and hope to
finish the top corner this weekend.

damn ive been sick this week.
not able to do much for the first couple of days.
now getting over the hump,
im able to do a bit of drawing then
go back to the couch and watch a movie.

im now up to 30 wins on the ranked wins (about 1100 battle points
in street fighter 4.
moving on up!
heres what ive learned so far:
1.dont fierce uppercut on wake up.
2.throw one crouching jab punch or eat lots of pain.
3.block after knocking them down.
4.there are lots of ken ryu and akumas online.
5.be patient, and time out if u have to.

i also broke my hori ex2 arcade stick so
im in the middle of modding that bad boy.
its going to be a mutant, but i do what i gotta.
controllers suck to use when playing sf4,
but im learning how to calm down,
and rely on other moves to win.
pokes rule!

and its sad to see the current wave of layoffs industry wide.
nexxon (vancouver) was the latest to get hit and the company is gonzo.
90 people suddenly out of jobs wtf.
ea laying off most of black box employees wtf (150-200 people).
and it sounds like alot of companies around town are taking the hit.
well, i thought i would take this time out
to acknowledge those who lost thier jobs,

i actually dont mind one track....maybe every other album...
but this crap is spreading.
let the real singer live and get them for your track and
stop the garbage on wax.

(not much to look at).
but, the goals for the week are...
1. get 25% of this done.
2. get pencils for a contest drawing done.
3. post the tail end of 08 pics, and start of 09 pics.

went to see norm macdonald on saturday night and that destroyed.
since coming to van ive seen:
chris rock, norm macdonald, george carlin (on his last tour),
don rickles (and i got insulted so i can die now), and henry rollins
(not necessarily a comedian, but hes entertaining).
its hard to rank norm after all those names,
but he is top tier, and everyone ive seen has been top tier.
hmmm, only guys i wanna see as far as comedians go is
bill cosby, seinfeld, hmmm....not too many others.
also watched ufc earlier in the day and that was so-so.
there were some highlights on the card,
(henderson/franklin, davis/lytle)
but shogun/coleman was hella wack.
2 tired guys fighting wtf.
it was also double xp weekend on call of duty:world at war
for the multiplayer mode (uh oh).
got in lots of that,
got some drawing in, finally started inking on some parts.
went over to anton's restaurant (which is hella dope).
ill have to get the pic off my phone to show off
"the realness".

yea a whole bunch of nothing going down in the last couple of weeks.

im spinning my wheels,

trying to get this year started off.

but....

i wrote down all of my goals for the year (artwise)

and the list is long.

i threw out the first version of drawing no. 3,

and i gotta start over.

i think i have to be more disciplined as far as jumping into inking the drawing.

this one is going to be different.

so far, for this year,

i have planned.....

6 large drawings,

2 skateboards,

painting a blank toy,

and a contest that has popped up which is due march 1.

sounds like alot,

but now its time to budget the time and follow thru.

i hope to output the most personal art this year

since college. (while working)

lets see what happens.

first post of 2009!
its been a while, ive been offline and a hermit for the last month.

above is a link i found today,

anyways,
ive finally started on drawing number 3 on monday night...
(monday january 5th)
see how slow or fast i can finish this bad boy.
maybe a pic at the beginning of next week.

im gonna see norm macdonald next weekend! (word up!)
im gonna see kool keith next month! (word up pt. 2!)
hope theres more shows coming in the next couple of months to jumpstart this year!

time to figure out how to pace myself,
and get the following things done:

photography (entering year 3)
reading (get these 3-4 books out of the way in 2 months or so)
exercize (how many hours are there in a day??!!)
gamning (cause thats part of my job!!)

kanye west - 808s and heartbreak
(to me, its hella wack)
mos def at rock the bells
(i love mos, but his set was tough to sit thru...
it was a tribute to reggae,
when i wanted to see mos.)
nas - untitled
(it wasnt like this album was a total disappoinment,
but god's son brought back nas.
this felt like nastradamus)
wu tang clan - 8 diagrams
(i generally liked this album,
but listening to their concert on dvd
live at monteux,
this album fell way short of what it was supposed to do)

i bought the new kanye west -808s and heartbreak and....
its a coaster!
i like kanye, i liked all his albums but damn...
i enjoy a vocoder/autotune songs,
from people who can actually sing.
(like roger troutman and to a degreee t-pain)
but a whole album of a guy constantly being auto tuned,
and ish is hella wack.
i dont mind exploring new directions in creativity,
just ask the beastie boys about that.
(the mix-up is dope)
then i heard a leak of the new common album.
common is dope,
but this album...is so-so.
hopefully what i heard was throwaway tracks.
i heard ALOT of pharell williams and neptunes beats.
which sounds like a good idea at first,
but not with common.
well on tha flip side....

well last night was 'super street fighter 2 turbo hd' remix night.

over the weekend, i finished the drawing.
so happy im done with this one.
i now realize that it was a good stretching exercize,
but im done with the warmups.
its time to get very real.
i gotta figure out a theme for number 3 and fast.

great looking game and i give the props to the team for coming up
with a top tier effort.

heres the drawing as of just before the weekend.

this weekend was interesting.

saturday was street fighter 4 during the day

and ufc by night.

damn....was hoping for experience to pull thru.

i feel for couture...

i hate it when it when the fight

was decided not by skill,

but by size.

sure lesnar won,

but i dont think he deserved that fight.

all of the hard work by other fighters and everyone

behind him in history...

but i guess thats why i like the sport as well...

anything can happen.

the whole card was pretty good,

finishes all over the place.

one guy i didnt like was jorge gurgel.

a jiu-jitsu black belt who decides to punch his way thru everything.

its painful trying to watch this.

sunday was super quiet...

chilliin and listening to tunes,

and pounding away at this drawing.

i try to put the time in when i should be doing real life ish.

something inspirational...

i watch biggest loser every week,

and in alot of ways i feel for everyone on that show,

since im going thru the same battle.

i wish i had all day to lose weight.

and the money for someone to kick my ass,

and teach me how to really change my life.

but im going to try and not let life pass me by.

gotta continue to read health books,

get creative with the daily routine,

and stop bein a bee-itch about life.

the key to change doesnt start on january 1st '09,

with new years resolutions....

but i recently stumbled on cghub.com, and some of the

zbrush and mudbox forums.

so many talents out there,

and ill try to gather up some favs, and post em soon.

tommorrow, ill try to post the drawing as of a couple of days ago.
ive got the right edge to work on, and a 2 inch strip along the top.
so close to the finish line....its ridiculous.
and then what...oof.
time to think about number 3,
and possible themes.
im considering doing 8 instead of 6,
and the first 2 will be considered as warm-up/
throw away images.
but we shall see how things go over the next year.

whooo..tubleweed throughout the company today.
its rememberance day and i took yesterday off
instead of today.
kinda weird sitting there with not alot of people there.

anyways...
today i spent reflecting on what i should do next since
(at work) im inbetween projects.
i think its time to start drawing at work as well as draw at home.
spent most of today looking and other peoples art blogs and going from link to link to link.
saga of seven was one of the blogs found today.
i think i have to go back to finding inspiration and spreading it around.
